Imperial Furniture

The Imperial Furniture museum is a museum that houses the main furniture of Habsburg monarchs.  There are over 1,600 pieces to be seen and is probably the largest collection of old furniture in Europe. The main house is located on Andreasgasse 7. That's where Joan and I decided to spend our last day in Vienna although there is so much more to see.

1747 was the first Hofmobilieninspektor with the inventory, care and transportation of the courtly furniture inventory of Empress Maria Theresa in charge. In 1809 he received the court service designation Hofmobiliendirektion and was also responsible for the Neuankauf imperial furniture. In 1901, finally, the present building of the Imperial Hofmobiliendepot on Andreasstrasse 7 was constructed as a central warehouse for the furniture located not in use with the repairers and coach-houses. As the Habsburgs equipped the their residences and palaces in accordance with the style of the times and their own aesthetic preferences, it reached 160,000 objects in the exhibition. What was no longer needed, emigrated simply to the depot. After the end of the monarchy 1919, the entire Empire furniture inventory became the property of the Republic of Austria. Part of it was and is used for representational purposes, such as the official premises of the Federal President.

We spent a long time looking at the pieces available and absolutely loved seeing the remarkable woodwork, marquetry, marble inlays, gold and silver inlays and different kinds of furniture made for them from different countries. It's difficult to say what was the most spectacular to see because they were all remarkable.

Of course, there were many family portraits and a large family tree of the whole Habsburg lineage and I took some pictures of them but can't remember who fits where in the tree.

So we didn't run around Vienna today trying to see as much as we could, instead we concentrated on one thing and that was good for us.  Maybe in some future time we will return again to Vienna but now, tomorrow morning we'll connect the GPS and head to Budapest. We'll still be connected to the families we have learned about here because of their connection to Hungary when it was the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
