Strawberries.

Nice day for a long walk to Rusalka lake, through the woods and then we returned to home. Strawberries are definitely in season, there are 3 little stands set up by individuals selling them close to our flat. Joan bought 2 kilos and is cutting them up now as I write this. She likes strawberries, I do too but not like she does.

I took advantage of the nice weather and washed the windows, cleaned up the balcony where some paint came off and fell on the floor. When I find out what kind of paint to use I will repaint the balcony walls. They have accumulated some stains where the water has dripped down and it doesn't look good.

With the election only two days away, candidate Kaczyński was in Poznań last night, in the rynek, trying to reach out to people and get more votes. He has lost a few points in the poll since he made a mistake in one of his speeches and it helped his opponent, Komorowski.

Tomorrow is the usual Friday, morning will be food shopping and in the afternoon at 3PM we will go to Kandulski's for our meeting with Zbyszek.

  1. One of my friends just came back from Poland. She purchased strawberries and was surprised how expensive they were. She mentioned that overall the food costs are very high in comaprison to the States. I am not sure if you could compare the costs since you have been in Poland for a while. Do you know of any new visitors to Poland? What do they feel about the cost of food and other goods in Poland in comparison to US.

  2. Ann,
We thought when we arrived in 2007 the cost of many things was higher now than the U.S. A pair of Levi's for example is around $100-$125. Housing, gas, food are certainly higher. Medicine, on the other hand is much, much cheaper. We don't have any newly arrived friends but maybe Lori will comment on the price differences since she is in the U.S. and Poland frequently.

  3. You are right, food is cheaper in the United States, because without many people knowing it -- our country has a cheap food policy and subsidizes agriculture and imports. This has been going on for so long that perhaps it's automatic now and people don't realize that. The cheap food policy was brought to my attention the first time I came to Europe in the 1970s and Germans who had been to the States commented on the price difference. On the other hand, I don't think the higher prices are uniform. I am surprised about how much I can walk away with from the nearby produce stand here for $3.00 or less.

I waited for the strawberries to be more local in Hungary. I don't know where they were coming from, say in April. More local is both better quality and better.

Another comment -- often the quality is simply so much better than our mass produced foods that any extra expense is worth it.

Jeans here are expensive, but cheaper -say about $50.00. What all we Americans can't believe is how many shoe stores there are and how expensive shoes are. Shoes are much more expensive here than in Poland. So one just has to be a vigilent shopper. And I'll invoke my rule: "If you want everything to be like it is at home, stay home."
