Valentine and Ethno Museum.

Up at 8AM this morning to a gray day but determined to see something new today. First I went to Carrefour to buy bread and flour for Joan to make the cinnamon rolls again. Next I stopped in Praktiker to buy an orchid for Joan for St. Valentines day but found an unusual plant, Guzmania bromeliad. I don't know it but thought it was a prettier object to give her. She was, of course, surprised by it and that was half of the joy of giving it to her. Valentines Day in Poland may not be quite as big of a deal as in the U.S. but it is close.

After breakfast at 11AM we decided it was a good day to go to the Ethnographic Museum on Grobla street because we had not seen that museum yet. The actual entrance to the building is on Mostowa street so we had to walk around the building to get to it.

Established in 1986, the Ethnographic Museum is housed in the former Masonic lodge building, an early 19th century late classicist edifice. At that time, the plot of land was purchased from the city by Free Masons who immediately proceeded with the construction. The architectural design was most likely authored by Christian Wernicke Lodge Master of the Piast.

The Museum houses artifacts of Greater folk culture. The permanent exhibition entitled Folk Art in Greater features 19th and 20th century sculptures, paintings, folk costumes, embroidery, decorative items (of ceramic, iron and wood), worship objects and musical instruments. The items are grouped into four categories displayed in Textiles and Costumes Folk, Folk Art, Technology and Non-European Cultures Sections.

As with all National Museums in Poznań, Saturday is a free day so it's a good time to go. We paid 12zl ($4) for a ticket that would allow me to take pictures but that is also a common occurence now in Poland. The most impressive was the clothing made and worn during certain periods. The pictures don't really do justice to the workmanship involved and the way the raw materials were turned into linen and cloth.

As usual there is a slideshow on the right side.

Budzilismy o 8am dziś rano szary dzień, ale stanowczy, aby zobaczyć coś nowego dziś. Najpierw pojechałem do Carrefour kupić chleba i mąki Joan aby cynamonu rolkach ponownie.

Stała wystawa sztuki ludowej w Wielkopolsce funkcje 19-ci i 20-cie wieku rzeźby, obrazy, stroje ludowe, hafty, przedmioty dekoracyjne (ceramicznych, żelazo i drewno), przedmioty kultu i instrumentów muzycznych.

    Dear Joan and David,

Happy Valentine's Day to you both.
Enjoy your plant. It is very easy to take care of. Just give it a little water inside the cup of leaves in the center, about 1/8 of a cup once a week. Once a month you can mix some water soluble fertilizer and add with your water. The yellow center is the flower stalk and at its center there either should be or will appear very small flowers. Once the plant has bloomed will stay like that for long time and than mother plant dies, but before that she will make little pups or small new plants which will grow into big once. Bromeliads last for very long time and are easy to take care of. There are many different types and all are just gorgeus.
enjoy your day and have soem fun, even though it is winter, we can feel it in Florida too. Today we have 44 degrees F in the morning, so we have to deal with cold weather. In Pensacola snowed Friday and yesterday. Dallas had over 12 inches of snow and so did deep South.

We are all looking forward to spring.

    Best wishes,
