A small thing!

It's a small thing but it still makes me think. My last name is Piekarczyk. Living in the U.S. for all my life I have had many ocassions when someone asked me my last name and how to spell it. Not even once in my when I spelled the name did the person get it right. I would have to repeat the spelling two or three times before they got it right.

Today I had to make a doctors appointment with a new doctor and when I said my name, the receptionist spelled it out correctly, the first time, without my having to spell it. The name itself is fairly common in Poland. There are over 5000 in Poland so it is not an uncommon name. A small thing, like I said, but it is still nice to have the name recognized and easily spelled.

An acquaintance I have returned today from Germany. We meet during the week and he helps me with my polish conversations. He was there on a business training trip. He told me that in Germany, it is totally different than Poland regarding pedestrians. In Germany, when a pedestrian enters a place for crossing the street, the driver of a car must stop immediately. In Poland, you wait until a driver stops and then you cross the street. I have witnessed more than one time when driver will not stop and you wait and wait and wait to cross a street. Even then you must constantly watch for another vehicle. Maybe this will change as the younger generation learns to stop for pedestrians.

In the afternoon i had to go back to the print shop to retrieve my software CD so Joan accompanied me. It was too nice of a day for her to stay home. We parked the car on Libelta street, picked up the CD and then went for a walk through the streets of Poznań. We took Libelta street east until we reached Plac Ratajeskiego then headed north to Plac Wolności. Now that school is back in swing, the volleyball courts have been taken down and the Plac is empty. Since we were so close to the Rynek it was only natural :-) that we went there to our favorite place and had Cafe Latte's. It's 16zl($6.92) for two. We very much like the Rynek. It's a perfect place to sit, talk, drink coffee and watch the people go by. With the beautiful weather we have today it would be a crime to sit at home. We only had 3 beggars come to our table to ask for money. That is normal for the Rynek. I guess the beggars figure if you have enough money to have coffee there you should be able to give them money. It reminds me of when we worked in Chicago. When we went to sit outside for with our lunches there were always beggars.

Musiałbym powtórzyć pisownię dwu albo trzy razy zanim oni dostali to w prawo.

Dzisiaj musiałem zrobić umówiony termin doktorów z nowym doktorem i kiedy powiedziałem moje imię, recepcjonista z mozołem odczytał to poprawnie, pierwszy czas, bez mojego muszenia przeliterować to.

Spotykamy się podczas tygodnia i on pomaga mi z moimi rozmowami blasku. Mimo wszystko musisz stale oczekiwać innego pojazdu.

To jest doskonałe miejsce by usiąść, powiedzieć, wypić kawę i obserwować ludzie mijają. Z piękna pogoda mamy dzisiaj to byłaby zbrodnia by usiąść w domu. Tylko mieliśmy 3 żebracy przychodzą do naszego stołu by poprosić za pieniądze. To jest normalne dla Rynek. Domyślam się żebraków postaci jeżeli masz dosyć pieniędzy by wypić kawę tam powinieneś móc dać im pieniądze. To przypomina mi z kiedy pracowaliśmy w Chicago.

  1. I was surprised with beggars in Torun. I've not seen this in Warsaw or Krakow in the Rynek. And about your name. If I say my last name in the European way, people can spell it too. That's fun.
